After dominating their two previous opponents, Charlotte received a taste of their own medicine, losing to Marshall, 87-72. This was their largest defeat since Dec. 5, when the 49ers fell to Miami by 18 points.

Andrien White led the way for the 49ers with 16 points and six rebounds. Braxton Ogbueze pitched in with 12 points.

White opened the scoring for Charlotte after Marshall jumped out to an early five-point lead. After free throws from Curran Scott and Joseph Uchebo to cut the lead to two, Marshall would thunder ahead to a 10 point advantage at 15-5 after eight unanswered points. Charlotte knocked the lead down to five at 21-16 after a three-point trifecta, two from Ogbueze and the other from Ridell Camidge. But three of James Kelly’s 27 points would spark a 10-2 Marshall run, extending their lead 38-22. The 49ers would inch their way back into the game, going into halftime down 42-31.

Charlotte would open the second half by scoring the first five points to cut Marshall’s lead down to six. Marshall would quickly answer to regain a double-digit advantage. After a three by Ogbueze to weaken the Marshall lead to six, the Thundering Herd would score 12 of the next 14 points to pull away.

Charlotte’s bench continued their success by scoring 25 points, including eight from Reid Aube and seven from Anthony Vanhook. Marshall’s Kelly was the star of the game, notching a double-double with 27 points and 23 rebounds.

Charlotte will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 20 in their final game of their short road trip against Western Kentucky. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
