Thursday night was one for the record books. Behind three 20-point scorers, the first time since 2006, Charlotte pulled an upset, defeating Conference USA leader Marshall 103-95 to end a three-game losing streak. Going into Saturday night, the 49ers will take on Western Kentucky to close out their four-game homestand. The Hilltoppers hold the all-time series lead, defeating the 49ers both times last season. But Charlotte has been playing good basketball, as of late. Braxton Ogbueze averaged 13 points during the two matchups. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
BATTLE ON THE BOARDS
The 49ers are becoming a strong rebounding team behind Joseph Uchebo. The senior transfer from Pittsburgh is averaging an impressive 11 rebounds per game which ranks him first in C-USA and eighth in the nation. What’s more amazing is that Uchebo is averaging nearly 20 rebounds per game over the last four games.
But it’s not a one-man show.
Andrien White chipped in with 10 rebounds of his own in his team’s previous game against Marshall. The 49ers out-rebounded the Thundering Herd 45-29. Also, the 49ers lead C-USA in offensive rebounds with 13 per game. That stat is one of the reasons why Charlotte is playing better. By grabbing so many offensive boards, it generates extra possessions, which Charlotte has cashed in on. Against UAB, the 49ers had 17 second-chance points.
WKU SCOUTING REPORT
Western Kentucky comes into Halton Arena after a loss to Old Dominion. The Hilltoppers are a sub .500 team, with a 10-9 record on the year. They are a very strong team at home (6-1), but struggle on the road (1-6).
WKU is led by sophomore forward Justin Johnson, who averages 17 points and eight rebounds. Along with the forward, running mate and University of Illinois transfer Aaron Cosby provides plenty of production with 12 points and four rebounds.
The Hilltoppers are one of the highest scoring teams in the conference, ranking fourth at 77 points per game. But something to watch, WKU is also a strong rebounding team ranking third in offensive and defensive rebounds. Uchebo has been a force on the boards, but he may have his work cut out for him Saturday night.
